Medical Assistants play a critical role in the daily operations of doctor’s offices, clinics and healthcare facilities. As important members of a healthcare team, they help doctors and nurses perform their daily tasks more efficiently. Medical Assistants may also serve as the first point of contact with a patient by collecting intake forms, taking samples or even performing initial point-of-care testing.
In addition to the patient interactions, you may be responsible for administrative duties that include filing medical records, scheduling appointments, handling patient billing and insurance claims, preparing examination rooms, recording vital information, maintaining inventory and ordering supplies. In many settings, you will report to a doctor or nurse and handle incoming communication to the office or department. Medical Assistants in specialized offices may have additional duties specific to that field.

The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As a result, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
